01 — Problem
Lack of online discussions for important initiatives
eBay lacked an online platform for employees to engage in a discussion for initiatives such as Diversity and Inclusion. The existing intranet primarily supported one-way communication from the leadership.
02 — Solution
Creating an in-house social networking initially seemed like a daunting challenge. However, we hosted a hackathon around the theme of 'employee engagement' and were surprised to find usable social network products created by multiple engineers within a couple of weeks. Encouraged by the results of the hackathon, we created eBay Communities, a platform that facilitates team discussions.
