01 — Problem
Outdated websites on costly, archaic platform
eBay had thousands of outdated webpages, mostly caused by the dependency on developers to update the websites. These websites were not mobile friendly and did not match eBay's new design standards. Search returned bloated repetitive results due to the over-complicated architecture.
Development required to update individual pages manually
The existing intranet powered by Sharepoint was costly to upgrade and use, creating a negative cycle of stale content and longer backlog. As a result, most employee resources were getting outdated and difficult to find.
02 — Solution
I developed a working prototype of the drag-and-drop website builder and pitched it to leadership. The prototype allowed us to validate the website builder concept with content owners and confirm that this could solve the problem of outdated websites. Through Agile development, we launched Site Builder within a few months and iterated with additional features.
Site Builder enabled content creators to easily create and maintain the websites themselves. Webpages can be published instantly, with automatically standardized design elements and search integration. With built-in analytics and an intuitive dashboard, the information architecture is transparent and can be updated easily. Site Builder can support different levels of editor permissions and content approval workflows.
03 — Impact
- Removed the bottleneck of developer requirement for webpage creation.
- New, modernized webpages could be created faster than updating the old websites.
- All new websites were automatically searchable.
- Site Builder was developed and maintained at a fraction of Sharepoint's licensing and support costs.
